An astonishing achievement in long-form visual effects, but not in storytelling.
The first two hours are chocked full of character development. There is a character for almost any age. The only one that held any weight for me was the "a boy and his whale aka tulkun storyline". The whale named Payakan is by far the most interesting character. I also liked Spider since he made the fewest irritable decisions. The rest of the characters fell flat for me. Although not boring, I found myself becoming impatient, but then Cameron keeps distracting me with something pretty. Even something as simple as the rain in 3D is mind-blowing.
This 2-hour character legwork was intended to enhance the emotional attachment for the non-stop action-packed one-hour climax featuring Cameron's signature-style action scene's greatest hits. You will find hints of The Abyss, Titanic, and Aliens even down to the score.
The visual effects are unreal. This is, by far, hands down the best 3D ever created for a movie theatre because it was actually filmed in 3D for starters. Plus, with a High Frame Rate, the result must be seen to be believed. The visuals and motion capture are beyond belief. You thought you went to Pandora before, you've seen nothing like this. The high Frame Rate is perfect for this type of project. The action scenes flow with no blur. You can see every detail in every action scene. Top it off on a larger-than-life IMAX screen, everything becomes hyperrealistic.
The underwater scenes do not feel like underwater scenes, but like a whole new world.
Without the technical achievement, the film is kind of ordinary. The script is serviceable, and the acting works well enough. They all are fantastic actors and have great chemistry, and without them, this could have crashed and burned under the lack of depth of the dialogue.
The score and sound design are of premium quality, as Cameron always delivers.
Although this film didn't land for me the way I wanted it to, I can still highly recommend it. This is a perfect family film, very inoffensive, and nothing in the story to push any boundaries. Despite all the new names of clans and characters and some plot points that fly by quickly, it's easy enough to understand for any age. Plus, it's the best way to advocate for global warming you could ever ask for.
If you get out to one film in cinema this holiday season, pay for Dolby Cinema or IMAX or whatever premium format you can get it in. This will be worth every penny of your experience

Avatar Way of Water - review: (no spoilers)
No movie is perfect, but ... I'll unabashedly say it's the best movie production I've seen in years.
Why?
3D works - and is a must - for this visually stunning, immersive experience. The CGI animation is seamlessly integrated into breathtaking scale and precise details, and the creativity of the scenes with the other-worldly life forms of Pandora set against the advanced technologies of the human sky-people is simply mind-blowing, leaving you to wonder "how the hell did they do that?"
