We're officially a decade plus into the evolution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and yet somehow the first film to start things off, "Iron Man," remains one of its best despite how many films have come after it. With this year marking 15 years since it was released in theaters the same summer as "The Dark Knight," it's telling that it holds up as the best film of the entire Phase One of the MCU as well as one of the best superhero origin stories ever told and what I believe to be the best in that category. Jon Favreau really delivered the biggest film of his career as prior to this he has films such as "Swingers" and "Elf" to his name as a director, but he seemed to understand the world of comics as he crafts a truly great film based on a Marvel character that wasn't highly known but very familiar with many, but the biggest credit he's owed is convincing Kevin Feige and Marvel to take a huge gamble on Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role especially with his troubled past of arrest and substance abuse issues and saying it paid dividends is an understatement because RDJ literally redefined the character for years to come. This is one of the best casting choices in film history as Downey and Tony Stark/Iron Man have become synonymous with one another, as it's hard to imagine anyone else portraying this character, and his endless charisma and witty humor makes the character the true backbone and heart of the film and his chemistry with actors Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard, and Jeff Bridges really make the characters feel like people who've known each other for quite a while. This film still has the best suit of any Iron Man suit put on screen as the seamless blend of a practical suit and truly perfect CGI make it come together so well and every scene he's in it makes it feel larger than life, but at its core this film explores the arc of a man's reckless behavior coming back to haunt him and his redemption to right said wrongs as Tony's kidnapping and near death experience riddle him with PTSD but also a new outlook on life when given a second chance to do better. It's truly something that even today this film remains a Top 5 entry into this shared universe and holds the most important end credits scene in the entire universe as it spearheaded what came afterwards.
